Armour Hard Red Winter Wheat

Armour is a short, early maturing wheat developed by WestBred and licensed to AGSECO in 2008. It is broadly adapted to the Central Plains and had an outstanding year in 2010, following good yield records in K-State performance plots in 2008 and 2009. It has done well in all of Kansas, eastern Colorado, the northern half of Oklahoma, and all of Nebraska. Armour is one of the few varieties resistant to the new race of stripe rust. It has excellent tolerance to low ph soils, exceptional straw strength, very good tillering, and good leaf rust and powdery mildew resistance. Armour has good drought tolerance, but it needs moisture at the time of spring greenup. It has good test weight. It is susceptible to bacterial blight. Armour offers excellent yield potential to the Central Plains region.

Everest Hard Red Winter Wheat

Everest is the new early maturing, high yield potential wheat from K-State, controlled by the Kansas Wheat Alliance. It was one of the top two varieties in K-State yield trials in 2010. It is moderately resistant to Fusarium Head Blight (scab), barley yellow dwarf, Hessian fly, and the new race of stripe rust. It has good acid soil tolerance. Everest has an excellent test weight pattern, good tillering, and good straw strength. It is susceptible to tan spot and only moderately resistant to leaf rust. Everest only has average drought tolerance, so that may limit how far west it can go without irrigation. It is well suited for irrigation.

Art Hard Red Winter Wheat

AgriPro Art is a medium early variety with good tolerance to acid soils. It has resistance to Hessian fly, and is moderately resistant to leaf rust and powdery mildew. Art has great straw strength and good grazing potential in the fall. It has become one of the top performing varieties. Art has good test weight and winterhardiness and has done very well in central and eastern Kansas as well as in northwest Kansas and Nebraska. It is moderately susceptible to the new race of stripe rust and would benefit from a fungicide application in years when stripe rust is a problem. Below average drought tolerance may limit how far west Art can go unless it is under irrigation, yet it seems to tolerate drought fairly well if the nights are cool in the spring. An insecticide seed treatment in the fall can help protect it against barley yellow dwarf. Art should be planted in a timely fashion because it does not tiller well when planted late.

AP503 CL2 Hard Red Winter Wheat

AgriPro AP503 CL2 is the first hard red winter wheat with two genes for tolerance to the Beyond family of herbicides. This Clearfield variety gives greater options in weed control and herbicide timing. Another benefit is that you can use methylated seed oil (MSO) with the herbicide, which can improve control of feral rye, jointed goatgrass, downy brome, and other problem grasses. AP503 CL2 has good winterhardiness, good test weight and straw strength, and is resistant to soil-borne mosaic. Its best area of adaptation is north of I-70, but it can be grown in central Kansas. It is susceptible to leaf rust and moderately susceptible to stripe rust and would probably respond well to a fungicide application. AP503 CL2 starts very slowly in the spring, and that is not a matter of concern. Growers must sign a stewardship agreement stating that they cannot keep the grain produced for seed.

Santa Fe Hard Red Winter Wheat

Santa Fe is a WestBred variety licensed to AGSECO. It continues to be a good selection for central and eastern Kansas and Oklahoma. Santa Fe withstands freeze injury better than most varieties and has good leaf rust resistance. It has good grazing potential and is moderately tolerant to acid soils. It is a medium early maturity wheat, and with adequate moisture, Santa Fe has excellent yield potential. Straw strength is average. It is moderately susceptible to the new race of stripe rust and would respond well to a fungicide in years when that is a threat.

CJ Hard Red Winter Wheat

AgriPro CJ is a new, very early variety that tillers well. It has Hessian fly, tan spot, and septoria leaf blotch resistance, so it is ideal for no-till, continuous wheat production. CJ is tolerant to acid soils, and is an excellent choice with double crop soybeans. It is best suited for the eastern two-thirds of Kansas and Oklahoma. It has average straw strength and is moderately susceptible to stripe rust. CJ should be planted on the late side to avoid spring freeze injury.

Jackpot Hard Red Winter Wheat

AgriPro Jackpot is the "plant late and harvest early" wheat with great yield potential for south central and southeast Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. It is ideally suited for double-crop situations and does well on both irrigated and dryland farms. Jackpot grows rapidly in the fall, covers the ground quickly, and produces a tremendous number of tillers. It has excellent grazing potential. Jackpot is an early maturing wheat and has great test weight, good winterhardiness, good straw strength, and very good drought tolerance. It is intermediate to the new race of stripe rust. Jackpot's ability to hold winter dormancy is poor because it gets going so quickly in the spring. When leaf rust comes in early, yields can be maximized with a fungicide treatment.

PostRock Hard Red Winter Wheat

AgriPro PostRock has good general adaptation across most of the state of Kansas and in southern Nebraska. It is a very consistent variety and has a solid yield record. It has very good test weight and good aluminum tolerance. PostRock has intermediate resistance to leaf rust and moderate resistance to stripe rust. It has excellent straw strength, good winterhardiness, and good grazing potential in the fall. PostRock does well when planted late, and late planting could help avoid infection from barley yellow dwarf.

Shocker Hard Red Winter Wheat

Shocker is a WestBred hard red winter wheat licensed to AGSECO. It is an early maturing wheat. Shocker is best adapted to the wheat growing areas south of I-70 in Kansas and all of Oklahoma. It possesses good soil borne, stripe rust, and leaf rust disease protection. Erect juvenile growth habit gives it excellent grazing potential. Cattle should be pulled off Shocker early in the spring. Shocker is tolerant to acid soil, has good test weight, very good straw strength, and a very good yield record where adapted.

WB-Stout Hard Red Winter Wheat

WB-Stout is an early maturing release from WestBred/AGSECO. It is broadly adapted east to west in Kansas and northern Oklahoma, and has exceptional baking quality. WB-Stout offers a good package of disease resistance except that it is susceptible to the new stripe rust. With the application of a foliar fungicide or in a year when there is no stripe rust, it has an outstanding yield potential. It has good winterhardiness, good drought tolerance, good grazing potential, and is moderately tolerant to acid soil. Straw strength is average. In eastern Kansas, in years which excessive rainfall occurs at or near harvest, test weights may become an issue.

Hitch Hard Red Winter Wheat

Hitch is a WestBred variety licensed to AGSECO. It has consistently been among the best yielders in many locations in east and central Kansas, and has generally also done well in the western part of the state. Hitch is medium-short, has excellent straw strength, and terrific yield potential. It is a medium/medium late maturity, so that may determine how far south it can go. Hitch is later in heading but finishes grain fill quickly. It has good winterhardiness and holds winter dormancy well, making it a great selection for northeast Colorado and all of Nebraska. This variety offers very good levels of resistance to leaf rust, stripe rust, and stem rust. Hitch is susceptible to acid soils.

Protection CL Hard Red Winter Wheat

This hard red winter wheat variety was developed by Colorado State University and licensed exclusively to AGSECO. It is the first ClearfieldTM variety with Jagger in its pedigree. Like Jagger, Protection does not have a good level of resistance to leaf rust, but will often escape damage due to its early maturity. Protection is moderately resistant to soil borne mosaic and intermediately tolerant to acid soils. Protection offers good drought tolerance and excellent grazing potential.
